January 1997 Newsletter

Welcome 1997!  I don't know where 1996 went, but it did it in a hurry.  Time marches on!

The first even of 1997 will be upon us by the time you read this.  January 5, 1997 at the Gillfillan's for a sleigh rally.  This will start at 2 p.m.  Gary and Connie say you will be able to take a ride in the cold even if you don't bring your own horse and sleigh.  Bring "munchies" or snacks if you like and the beverages will be provided.  Note, if there is no snow or you are in doubt of a cancellation, please call Gary and Connie at 419/675-3257 to be sure.

Directions to Gillifillan's are to take US 68 five miles north of Kenton, Ohio or five miles south of Dunkirk to the Walnut Grove Church.  Go east on County Road 80 to the stop sign, (1 1/2 miles), turn right to the first house.

On January 12 there will be a BSDC meeting at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Findlay, Ohio at 2 p.m.  The meeting will highlight drives coming up this summer and show tapes of the past summer's drives.  Please bring "munchies" or snacks and beverages will be furnished by the club.

The trustees will meet to elect officers for next year.

Watch the Corral for details on further events.

If you would like to host an event on any dates not scheduled please contact a board member to get it on the calendar.  if you have any suggestions for topics at a winter meeting please let the board know.

As you are aware, the sleigh rally at Gilfillan's did not happen, temp 65 and no snow.

There were thirty-one persons present for the January 12 meeting at Findlay, Ohio.  The board of directors held their organizational meeting and elected officers for 1997.  The 1996 slate of officers were reelected.  Gary Gillifillan, president; Peggy Graham, vice president; Angie Hohenbrink, secretary/treasurer; and Joe Bell.  The directors meeting was followed by a meeting of the membership present to discuss events for the coming season.

Note, three new members were present and we sure welcome them.  Gerald and Marilyn Rasey brought a video of the Brown Jug parade at Delaware, Ohio which was enjoyed by all.  By the way, the food was excellent as always.

One sad note for our club was the death of Jim Stever on December 21, 1996 due to injuries received in an auto accident.  Jim was the member who had the team of mules.  Jim and Roger Murray were cousins.

Our next event will be a Sleigh Rally at Mark and Marla Newmans on February 9. 1997 at 1 p.m.  This will happen snow or not, so plan to attend.  Directions to Newman's: take State Route 67 west out of Kenton, Ohio.  Go two miles west from the city limits and Newman's will be on the right or north side of the road.  It is a large brick farm house.  Should be BSDC sign.  Bring snacks or munchies and coffee will be furnished.

Watch the Corral for details on future events.

If you would like to host an event on any dates not scheduled, please contact a board member to get it on the calendar.  If you have any suggestions for topics at a winter meeting, please let the board know.  Please get your club news to me by the 10 of the month.

Finally!  Spring is here.  I am sure everyone is welcoming the warmer weather, what we have had, and enjoying our pastime, driving.

On May 3, Tom Gilcher has his dispersal auction.  Several of the BSDC members were present and they will attest to the fact that it was a cold wet day.  BSDC members purchased some of the items in the auction.  The wicker trap was purchased by Mary Elliot and the Easy Entry cart went to Fred Thompson and the sleigh went to Peg Graham

May 3 was the drive at Spencerville, Indiana hosted by Harvey and Doris Fairchild.  The weatherman cooperated to a T, not too hot of cold, sunshine and good fellowship.  I think there were 13 turnouts and several more persons enjoying the day driving through the Amish community.  Oh! By the way, the food was excellent.  Doris fixed curried chicken even though she broke her kneecap in a fall.

Can't report on the drive at Hohenbrinks because it hasn't happened at I write this.

On June 7 (this is a Saturday) there will be a drive at Independence Dam State park hosted by Henry and Becky zumFelde.  Directions: take State Route 424 east of Defiance about 2 or 3 miles.  The Park is on the south side of the highway.  Parking will be in the Marina parking area.  The shelter house will be to the east of the parking area.  Potluck dinner will be at 1 p.m. with the drive to follow the roads in the park.  We are having this on Saturday in hopes it will not be so crowded with motorized vehicles as last year was.  Soft drinks will be furnished, bring a covered dish and table service.

On July 4, 1997 the club is invited to attend the celebration at the Hardin County Fairgrounds at Kenton, Ohio.  Plans are for BSDC members and guest to drive at will through out the day.  If enough turnouts are there, they may have a parade of vehicles.  If you wish, period dress is encouraged.  This is hosted by Gary and Connie Gillfillian.  Watch the July Corral for details.

At the present time, the 4th is the only event scheduled for July 1997 so if you would like to host an event this might be a good time to consider.

Just a note on an invite BSDC has.  McComb, Ohio is having a Centennial Celebration on August 16, 1997.  We are invited to participate in their parade on Saturday.  More details in future issues of the Corral.

The drive at Hamler, Ohio hosted by the Hohenbrink's was a very enjoyable affair.  In spite of the rain we were able to do the "Poker Run" before getting drenched.  There were 17 turnouts with 33 persons in attendance including guests, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Hefner who were going to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary the following week.  By the way, the food was excellent.

We did not get to attend the drive at Defiance Dam hosted by the zumFelde's, but it is reported there were seven turnouts and the day was very enjoyable.

On July 4, 1997 the club was invited to attend the celebration at the Hardin County Fairgrounds at Kenton, Ohio.  Plans are for the BSDC members and guest to drive at will through out the day (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)  If enough turnouts are there, they may have a parade of vehicles.  If you wish, period dress is encouraged.  This is hosted by Gary and Connie Gillffilan.

On Sunday, July 13, 1997 Roger and Susan Murray are hosting a drive at their farm.  Potluck at 1 p.m. with the drive to follow.  Murray's are planning to cook hamburgers and will furnish soft drinks.  Bring a dish to pass and table service.  Bring lawn chairs if you like.  To reach the Murray's take Ohio 231 south from Tiffin, Ohio or north from Sycamore, Ohio to Township Road 58 (Center Road) and go east to the third driveway on the right, back a lane.  FMI: Murray's 419/447-0076.

Just a note on an invite BSDC has.  McComb, Ohio is having a Centennial celebration on August 16, 1997.  We are invited to participate in their parade on Saturday.  More details in future issues of the Corral.

November 1997

Fall is definitely here!  Frost on the pumpkin this morning, October 15.  We will still have some nice weather to drive prior to winter.

The BSDC and guest clubs enjoyed the weekend of October 14 at Hardin Heritage Days.  The weather was fantastic both days. Host Gary and Connie Gillfillan planned an excellent event.  The hog roast on Saturday night was excellent and attended by 105 persons.  The fun auction following the meal helped the club put on the hog roast at no charge to attendees.  There were 11 turnouts for the parade through the grounds and an obstacle course to drive at will.  There were 5 members of the Ohio valley group present.  We enjoyed their company and we hope they had a good time.  Anyone having a good recipe for leftover pork should call Gary and Connie.

On the weekend of October 11 and 12 BSDC participated in the Ohio Cornhusking event at the Wyandot County Fairgrounds in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.  The weather was excellent for both days.  Hosts John and Sara Hunter planned an exceptional time for all in attendance.  Saturday night was a potluck with Mulligan stew over an open fire and the sugar popcorn following.  There were 42 in attendance for the stew and 14 turnouts for the parade through the grounds.  I do not know of any BSDC members husking corn.  John had an excellent obstacle course set up and several persons watched the activities.  Anyone could drive on the grounds or in the fields to observe the husking event.  A good scheduled drive of the season.

The final event will be the Annual meeting on November 15, 1997 at the Woodland Restaurant in Findlay, Ohio.  The Woodland is on Main Street across from the Courthouse.  Parking on the street or in the city lot off East Main Cross.

From 5:30 to 6:p.m. will be social hour with the meal to follow from 6 to 7 p.m. (order from the menu).

From 7:00 to 7:45 p.m. president Gary Gillfillian will present highlights of the past driving season for the BSDC.  At 7:45 will be the meeting portion and election of the board directors.  We will elect four directors and if you would be willing to be placed in nomination, please notify Gary at 419/675-3257 or nominations will be accepted from the floor.

There will be a fun auction following the meeting time.  Please bring something to sell at the auction.  This will be followed by the closing.

The Woodland request we be finished by 8:30 p.m.
