April 2014 BSDC Newsletter

During our winter meetings the club enjoys having speakers.  At our March meeting Marissa Greenslade, an equine massage therapist from Clyde, spoke on the importance of recognizing when a horse has muscle pain.  Before becoming a massage therapist, she worked with Hocking Valley Farms.  She helped to show Percherons on the national draft horse show circuit. After that experience Marissa finished college and earned a certificate as an equine therapist from the Helen J. Woods Equine Studies in British Columbia, Canada.  She recommended stretching, flexing and bending exercises for the horse’s well-being.

Marissa also entertained the club with her adventures traveling with the Hocking Valley Farms team.  On the way to the Calgary draft horse show, crossing the Canadian border was very frustrating.  The border patrol ordered the travel-weary team to unload two tons of grain and a trailer load of hay for customs inspection.  When the team leader told the border patrol to unload the grain themselves they were reluctantly allowed to cross.

This month I will feature sisters, Mary Elliott and Linda Spears, who have been active members for years.   They live close to Galion, OH. Mary has a new pair of black Percherons, and Linda likes driving Rowdy, the Appaloosa mini she raised.  Mary enjoys restoring carriages and carriage lamps.  She does her own upholstery.  Sometimes she does work for others and has repaired a door and added seat cushions to my governess cart.  A harness shop even had Mary do some leather braiding for them since they didn’t know how.  You’ll often see Mary and Linda checking out antique shops or auctions looking for the next project or addition to their collections.  Mary likes studying history and collecting anything to do with horses:  sleigh robes, foot warmers, carriage lamps etc.   Mary’s carriage collection is a work in progress including a Portland cutter on springs, Albany cutter, Walburn and Riker open buggy, a Brewster, and a Henry Hooker Slat Side Goabout.  I asked Mary if she meant Slat Side Runabout instead of Goabout.  She said she found it in a Henry Hooker catalog and it is indeed called A Slat Side Goabout. She also has some horse drawn farm machinery.  If you have any questions I’m sure Mary would be happy to help you.
