BSDC December 2014 Newsletter

Come join the Black Swamp Driving Club on Saturday December 13th for our last event of the year.  We will be going to “Christmas on the Farm” at the Hardin County Historic Village & Farm. This is located on Fairgrounds Road, right next to the Hardin County Fairgrounds, Kenton, OH.  Gary and Connie Gillfillan help coordinate this event. If you are bringing a horse and sleigh (weather??) arrive around noon to get parked. It starts at 1:00pm.  You can bring snacks for the school house where Santa Claus will be.   Cookies usually go well with the kids while they hope to get a sleigh or carriage ride.
We’d like to thank Mary Elliott and Linda Spears for hosting our October hayride at their farm.  They had a bonfire to keep everyone warm while we ate.   Then she hitched up her pair of percherons for a hayride around the field.
Our annual banquet in November was well attended and the auction which is our only fund raiser did well.   We’d like to thank Mary Elliott for being our auctioneer.  She always keeps everybody laughing.  We are glad to have 3 members volunteering to come on the board this year: Julie Emmons, Pam Baker and Mary Thomas.   They will select officers at the December 20th board meeting.
This month we’d like to feature John and Judy Heffernan who live close to Kenton.  They are both retired from the State of Ohio Bureau of Employment Services so have even more spare time to enjoy their horses.  John said his love of horses comes naturally as his grandfather imported draft horses and his father was involved with the Ohio State Racing Commission.  John started with Quarter Horses in 1968 with some showing and lots of trail riding.  In 1970 he attended the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School.  John and Judy married in 1980 and had been looking for a farm when one became available close to Kenton.  Then with guidance from their good Amish neighbors they acquired their first Belgian work horses.   John enjoys making hay and doing other farm work with his horses.  They also have a couple quarter horses which they enjoy riding.
We will be holding our winter meetings at the Good Hope Lutheran Church, 300 S Main Street, Arlington, OH from 2:00 to 4:00pm.   So mark your calendars for the second Sunday of the month:  Jan. 11, Feb 8th, and Mar 8th.
