Black Swamp Driving Club Enjoys Summer

August 2015 BSDC Newsletter, By Mary Thomas

Threatening weather didn’t stop the June 28 drive at Richwood Fairgrounds, hosted by Bernard and Pam Baker.  Fifteen members and a couple of turnouts spent the afternoon driving, socializing, and enjoying a tasty potluck.  Several members didn’t bring horses and carriages since it was already raining at their homes; however, the rain never reached the fairgrounds.

Black Swamp members Mary Ann Tock, Sue and Roger Murray entered vehicles in the Restored Carriages In Use competition at the Carriage Asso. of America Festival at the Kentucky Horse Park June 26-28.  Tock’s restored 1901 Walborn & Riker pony cart earned a highly respected Silver Certificate (awarded for excellence in restoration with maybe a minor flaw or two).  The Murrays’ Columbus Buggy Co.’s Gentlemen’s Phaeton, restored by Willi Green, also received high marks, collecting a Silver Certificate, as well.  Tock, along with Mary Thomas, participated in the Small Pony classes during the Festival Pleasure Driving Show, picking up several top ribbons.  Thomas’ pony was the winner of the Small Pony Presentation Turnout Drive, held over a three mile course around the park.

Also attending the CAA Festival were Bobbe Polvony, Al and Angie Hohenbrink, Jeff Tock, and Connie and Gary Gillfillan.   The new CAA office was officially opened June 25 with dignitaries arriving in beautifully turned out coaches prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony with a champagne reception following.

Save Aug. 8 for a fun day out at Indian Lake with hosts Connie and Gary Gillfillan.  Boat rides on the lake will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by a noon cookout and potluck.  See the July Corral for directions or call 567-674-0151.  Please, no horses at this event.  Later on Aug. 22, head to Bucyrus, OH, for the Unger Park drive.  Check the club website (www.blackswampdrivingclub.com) for details and directions to the park.

Two great fall drive will highlight September.  First is the Parker Bridge drive Sept. 20, hosted by Julie Emmons, followed by the Coon Hunters Lodge drive, Tiffin, OH, Sept.27, organized by the Murrays and the Macks.
