Black Swamp Driving Club Holds Sleigh Day

BSDC February 2016 Newsletter

by Mary Thomas
What happens when your scheduled Sleigh Day has no snow and 60F. temps?  Black Swamp members showed up for Christmas on the Farm at Kenton, OH, Dec. 12 with wheels.  Gary and Connie Gillfillan brought a cute mini to pull their sleigh on wheels, and Tom Stirk provided more mini power and a cart.  Visitors to the event (including Santa Claus) had the chance for a ride in one of the turnouts.
The historical area next to the fairgrounds in Kenton includes an old schoolhouse where BSDC members met to enjoy the holiday decorations and a musical program consistent with the Christmas on the Farm theme.  A brief board meeting was called to order by outgoing president Roger Higgins, Jr.  Officers for 2016 were chosen, ideas for the upcoming winter meetings were discussed, and a few events for the new  year were scheduled.
New officers include President Julie Emmons, Vice-president Roger Higgins, Jr., Treasurer Susan Murray, and Reporter Mary Thomas.  The Jan. 14 meeting at the Good Hope Lutheran Church, Arlington, OH, will feature an educational program as will the March 13 meeting.  The meetings begin at 2:00 p.m. with wonderful potlucks to follow.  One project suggested for a future meeting was for members to scout out old carriage houses in their localities, photograph them, and then have the pictures collected  into a video presentation for the club.
Some events are already set for 2016.  Julie Emmons will host the popular drive at the Stagecoach Inn in McCutchenville, OH, May 21.  She has been busy setting up a tour to the Studebaker Museum in Indiana for Sept. 18, and will continue to host the Parker Bridge drive, Upper Sandusky, OH, Oct. 8.  On Sept.25, Sue and Roger Murray will again hold their combined BSDC/WRCA drive at the Coon Hunters Lodge, Tiffin, OH.
Interested in driving horses, ponies, mules, or donkeys?  You don’t need an equine to drive to enjoy membership in the Black Swamp Driving Club.  Members are always willing to share their turnouts and knowledge with new members.  Come to a meeting or contact one of the officers listed at the top of this article for more information and a warm welcome to BSDC.
