Mike & Jackie Minges and their pair of donkeys

Dale & Molly Owen

It’s finally time for our spring drives starting on May 3rd with the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. Come join us for our Derby Day Drive at Riverbend Park, 16618 Township Road 208, Findlay, Ohio 45840. Come show off your fanciest Derby hat and maybe even decorate your carriage for spring. The potluck will be at noon with the drive to follow.  It will be hosted by Mike & Jackie Minges and Molly & Dale Owen.  So this month they will be our featured BSDC members.

Mike and Jackie Minges have been members of BSDC for seven years. Mike retired from a busy career with Owens Corning and Jackie retired from showing and breeding champion Old English Sheepdogs throughout the United States and Canada.  Their son Bryan is busy with his own career.
For as long as anyone can remember, Jackie has talked about how she always wanted a Donkey.  Finally, while attending the Michigan Horse Expo in Lansing, MI she visited with volunteers from Turning Pointe Donkey Rescue and six months later Darryl and Darnell would become part of their family.  Although both Jackie and Mike had horses while growing up in Cincinnati, it would soon become apparent that, “these are not just horses with long ears”; training is so very different.  Through much patience building trust and confidence, the Boys are now driving single and as a pair.  Jackie, Mike (her groom), and “The Boys” have participated in clinics and drives in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.  Their favorite is the National Drive at the Kentucky Horse Park.  But, they love attending all the pleasure drives, although for them VSE is not very small equine but “very slow equine”.

Also hosting this event are Dale and Molly Owen, who live north of Bucyrus, OH.  They have been involved with the BSDC for four years.   Molly served as secretary the past three years and Dale as general worker, helper, groom, “go-fer” and fabricator of BSDC signs and display racks for the club.  Molly has had her own horses for over 43 years and is still learning.  Dale found out what the term “horse-lover” really meant when he married Molly (and her horses) 29 years ago.  They enjoyed camping and trail riding for many years, but, now really enjoy the time spent together driving their Haflinger gelding, Archie, on quiet back roads and around lovely parks.

On May 17th, 2014, the Emmons Family will host a drive at the Overland Inn at McCutchenville, Ohio. You may arrive at 10:30 a.m., and the potluck is at 12:00 noon.  We will dine just like the travelers of the Inns’ did. You’re welcome to just display carriages on the grounds if you aren’t bringing a horse. This would make an awesome photo opportunity. Restrooms will be available. The drive will be traveled on all back roads. SMV signs are required. The drive is 8 miles in length, round trip.  If you have any questions, please call Julie Emmons at 740-361-3885. We hope to see you at the drive!!!

On June 1, Michele Steven & Sherry Olecki will host a joint WRCA/BSDC drive at Infirmary Mound Park 4309 Lancaster Road (SR37), Granville, OH 43023.  The Park does reserve the right to close trails to preserve trail footing so this drive will be held with weather permitting and trails being fit. Park at the Equestrian day use trailhead and meet at Shelter #5 at 11:30 for Noon Potluck.  This shelter has electric, potable water and primitive privies.  A short Driver's meeting and distribution of maps will follow the meal.

Trails are wide, 7' -10', with natural surfaces of turf, clay, and gravel in spots.  Trails will be marked because there are a few that are not driving friendly.   Terrain is rolling hills with forest and meadow areas.  Elevation changes are mostly gradual and not very long.  There is one Park road crossing.  Last year this road was closed to cars for the day.  Driving on the Park's roads is permitted.  There are options on length of trail to traverse.  The trails make basically two big loops with a crossover at the middle.  Actual trail lengths are hard to find.  The trail system is multi-use, meaning you may encounter riding horses, hikers, dog walkers, and maybe a mountain bike.  Nothing motorized.  Horses do have the right of way, but nothing is stated in rules about driving vs. riding encounters.
