BSDC October 2003 News
By Roger Higgins
Greetings, Happy Autumn! Where did the time go? The club still has some events
coming up. We had two drives in September and I am giving the
information for the last two drives of the season. We have had a great time so
far, and I am sure it will continue. Our next drive is October the 18th. This
drive is hosted by John and Sarah Hunter. It's time for the Corn Husking
weekend in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. I have a letter from John and Sarah in
reference to their drive. The State and National Corn Husking Contest
will be held October the 18th and 19th, 2003, at the Wyandot County
Fairgrounds in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. You may arrive on Friday night the 17th
if you would like to. Camping is available on the fairgrounds with hookups for
water and electricity. There are several motels nearby, Comfort Inn @
1-800-228-5150, Amerihost Inn @ 1-800-434-5800, and Day's Motel @
419-294-5161. The Black Swamp Driving Club will have the vehicles displayed,
and the horses will be stabled in the 4-H horse barn. You may drive at your
leisure throughout the Fairgrounds.
Saturday night we will be making Mulligan Stew in an iron kettle with
meat furnished. Please bring some veggies, etc., for the stew and another
dish such as munchies or dessert if you wish. Coffee and rolls will be
provided each morning. Food stands will be set-up on the grounds the entire
weekend as well as many great craft booths. Various activities,
demonstrations, and contests will also be taking place for the enjoyment of
all your family. There will be a church service on Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m.
in the log cabin by the entrance to the fairgrounds, and breakfast is served
in the dining hall. NOW, just pray for some good weather and we will be all
set. For more information, call John and Sarah Hunter at 419-396-6746. Hope to
see you then! Thanks John and Sarah for the letter, it gives us a better
idea of what is happening there. I also have some directions to this
event as follows: State Route 53 is the magic road. It takes you right
past the fairground. You can get there by exiting off of SR 23 and going
South towards town. The fair grounds
will be on your left. You can also pick up SR 53 off of SR 30 and go
north, but you will have to go into Upper Sandusky to do this. We always
have a great time at the Corn Huskers.
The next drive is hosted by Mark and Marla
Newman, on October the 26th. Here is the info on their drive.

I did receive an update about a bridge being out, I believe these directions
will get you there around the detour. I will report any updates when I receive
them. For more info on the drive call 419-365-1613.
Then, to wrap-up the year, we are having the Annual Banquet. This event will
be held on November the 8th at the Schnipke Inn, in Ottawa, Ohio. Social
Hour will be from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. with relish tray and drinks, dinner
will start at 6:00. Dinner is served buffet style, entrees will consist
of Roast Beef, Swiss Steak, and Chicken. The cost is $11.00 for adults, the
cost for children is adjusted by age. Payment is due at the door. The
cost includes the tip. Please note, The committee is trying to establish
a count of people, so they can give the Inn an estimate on how many will be
attending. Please call Connie and Gary Gillfillan at 419-675-3257, or Ann and
Joe Bell at 419-694-2085, and let them know how many reservations your party
will need. This year we will be having an auction. We all really enjoy the
auction. Mary Elliott is the chairperson. There will be door prizes as
well. Mary requests that each family bring something for the auction. What
a great way to wrap-up the year.
It doesn't seem possible that the drives are coming to an end.
Its a great time to start planning for next year. That's right, we will
be submitting the 2004 drives at the January meeting. With the
busy holiday season right around the corner, its a good time to start thing
about things for next year. If anyone has anything they would like to put
in the next article, please let me know. This is all I have for this month.
